Klaipėda region

Winds and waves of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon

For a smooth start, set your sails to Klaipeda, the oldest city in Lithuania, a land of shining water, as the poetess Agnes Miegel once put it. Klaipėda town is charming all the year round. Here you will discover lots of great coffee shops, museums, galleries and local restaurants while wandering through the small streets of the old town.

If you follow the current of the Dange River, it will lead you outside the city to the Curonian lagoon, a central artery of the region, dotted with nostalgic piers and small maritime harbours. Set your course to Dreverna, in the Klaipeda district, an old fishing village, where you will be introduced to the local cuisine and its variations in a unique way – by cooking fish in the middle of the lagoon on a traditional Curonian boat, the “reisekahn”.

Water lovers' paradise

If you want more action, then Svencelė is just what you are looking for – a paradise for kitesurfing and wind. Not challenging enough? Increase your adrenaline level by visiting the famous spring floods in the Silute district. This is one of the few places in Europe where, during seasons of high water, vast grasslands and wetland forest areas are flooded, where nature and man over the centuries have adapted to constantly raging change. If you need a break, then you can calm down in the shallowwaters of the Curonian Lagoon and the Nemunas River, a place where you can discover the kingdom of birds that migrate through these territories every season.

Turn to the opposite side of the lagoon and you will be mesmerized by pure beauty of Neringa, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Simply stop, breathe in and experience that moment of mindfulness just by enjoying golden sunsets over white sand dunes, taking a hike, or slowly paddling your canoe among one of the largest and highest ranges of sand dunes in Europe, where walking is forbidden.

Inland beauty

After filling up on your inner peace, drop your anchor in the Lithuanian summer capital Palanga, a resort with something for every taste – SPA lovers, beach fun seekers, or young families looking for a relaxing break. Discover more of the region’s inland beauty by exploring local museums, flora, and the lovely green fields of Kretinga, a town known as the region’s little Vatican, since it houses five monasteries. For more unspoiled natural landscapes, head to the Skuodas district, an undiscovered gem, preserving the pagan roots of the Baltic nations and surrounded by nine nature reserves.

Stunning landscapes, astonishing adventures and friendly locals are closer than you think. Simply opt for this new holiday destination! It is waiting for you.
